TRAVEL DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR U.S CITIZENS:
When planning a cruise on Carnival, it is important to ensure that you have all the necessary documents to make your trip as smooth as possible. These documents will vary depending on your destination, age, and citizenship status.
In order to sail, guest must be in possession of ONE of the following four options for travel documentation; otherwise, guest will be denied boarding without compensation.
1) PASSPORTS – THE HASSLE-FREE WAY TO TRAVEL
- "For some voyages, traveling with a passport book is a requirement. Even when not required, we strongly recommend traveling with a passport. You will be traveling internationally, a passport (book) is the best document for hassle-free travel. Not only will it enhance your embarkation experience, it will also get you through customs and immigration processing faster at debarkation."
- "If you are looking for something more accessible, a passport card will also provide a speedy embarkation and debarkation experience. Passport cards are a nice alternative to passport books for sea travel to countries within Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) countries and may also be used as REAL ID (for domestic air travel purposes)."
- "In the event an emergency arises, a passport book is the only acceptable document for flying back home from overseas."
Note: A passport (book or card) must be valid for at least six months after the last day of the cruise.
2) U.S. PASSPORT CARD
- This document will denote both citizenship and identity.
- The passport card cannot be used for air travel outside the United States but is valid for land and sea travel between the United States and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean region and Bermuda.
3) STATE ENHANCED DRIVER’S LICENSE (EDL)
- This document will denote both citizenship and identity and will contain security features to facilitate the entry process at land and sea ports of entry.
- The following states issue Enhanced Driver's Licenses: Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington.
- The words ‘Enhanced Driver's License’ as well as the U.S. flag will appear on the license. Some EDL's may also have a star in the upper right corner.
- A Driver's License with only a star in the upper right corner is a Real ID Driver's License and not an Enhanced Driver's License; it cannot be used as a WHTI-compliant document (as proof of citizenship) but can be used as a photo ID.
4) GOVERNMENT-ISSUED BIRTH CERTIFICATE AND AN UNEXPIRED GOVERNMENT-ISSUED PHOTO ID
- Birth Certificate
-
- US-born citizens may obtain a copy of a birth certificate by contacting: The Department of Health and Vital Statistics at: vitalchek.com
- Original or printed copy of the original issued by a government agency (state/county/city) or the Department of Health and Vital Statistics. Must be clear and legible. Does not need to be notarized. If the guest has laminated their birth certificate, it is acceptable.
- Forms of Photo Identification (ID)
An unexpired government-issued photo ID** is required of all guests 16 years of age and older. These may not be used as standalone travel documents. They must be used in conjunction with proof of citizenship such as a WHTI compliant document or a Birth Certificate.
** A Mobile/Digital version of a photo ID is not an acceptable form of identification.
MISCELLANEOUS REMINDERS
Legal names:
First and last names on the cruise and airline reservations should match what is on the guest’s government-issued IDs. Any name changes will require documentation to bridge the name change; Marriage, Divorce or Legal Name change certificates.
- For those about to or recently have been married, we recommend that if the unexpired government-issued ID is in the maiden name, the cruise reservation be made in the maiden name.
Minor Guest Policy: Effective February 1, 2025
- Guests who are 21 to 24 years of age may travel with their minor children.
- Guests 14 years of age and younger: Must be booked with a relative or guardian (25 years of age or older) in the same cabin or a connecting cabin.
- Guests 15 - 17 years of age: Can be separated by up to 3 staterooms from a relative or guardian (25 years of age or older).
- Must be linked as “Travel With” a relative or guardian 25 years of age or older. Please advise Cruise Planners representative so that the bookings are noted and cross referenced.
- Guests 18 – 20 years of age: Do not have any restrictions and may book whatever location they prefer.
Traveling with minors:
When traveling with a minor where one parent or both parents or legal guardians are not cruising, we strongly recommend bringing an original signed letter from the absent parent(s) or legal guardians authorizing the minor to travel with you. If there is no second parent with legal claims to the minor (due to sole custody, deceased, etc.) other relevant paperwork, such as a court decision, death certificate, birth certificate naming only one parent, would be useful to bring in place of a signed letter. This will expedite processing by the Department of Homeland Security.
REGISTRATION:
Once you start the registration process, you will not be able to save entries and return later; it must be completed in its entirety to be submitted. Before starting, gather information for all guests in your cabin, i.e., names, birthdates, and contact details. When registering, please enter the name of each guest as it appears on their passport or other government-issued identification that they will use for travel.
Registering for the cruise does not confirm your cabin. You will be contacted once your cabin has been confirmed to provide you with final pricing and to process your deposit. During registration, you will be asked for your credit card info for the deposit. However, your card will not be charged until we have spoken with you to confirm your cruise.

About the Carnival Cruise Line Mardi Gras
MARDI GRAS: FUN-FUELED VACATION INNOVATION POWERED BY LNG
When we launched our first ship, 1972's TSS Mardi Gras, we made cruising a lot less stuffy, a bit less fancy, the kind of fun everybody could enjoy. Nobody expected this ship to change the cruise world, but... here we are! So here’s a brand-new ship with a familiar name. With this Mardi Gras® we aren't just paying homage to our first ship — in cruising circles this name suggests innovation, signals the start of something big. Oh, and this Mardi Gras still shouts “fun!” at the top of its lungs. This ship introduces Zones — six themed areas packed with brand-new experiences for eating, drinking and spectacularly getting down to fun. There's BOLT®, the first-ever rollercoaster at sea, Emeril's Bistro 1396™ from yes-that-Emeril, Family Feud™ Live for everybody... plus incredible new bars like The Brass Magnolia and Fortune Teller. Everybody can enjoy Mardi Gras, sailing now. Come on down!
